We have some intriguing new titles for Spring 2009, the first of which is Invented Knowledge by Ronald H. Fritze, which looks at the world of fake science, pseudo-history and fringe religions. From the lost continent of Atlantis to the beliefs of the Nation of Islam and the theories of Erich von Däniken, Fritze shows how such ideas have become popular and enjoyed longevity despite their apparent wackiness and departure from mainstream history. By contrast, the renowned architectural writer Robert Harbison provides an idiosyncratic yet authoritative overview of Western world architecture from Egyptian times to the present in his Travels in the History of Architecture.
There are three new books in our extremely collectable Edible series: Hot Dog, Pie and Spices. Each of these gives a delectable history of the food or ingredient in question, providing a global overview, and are illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-white images.
Our Animal series goes from strength to strength with the swift-footed Hare, the maligned Ape and the slippery Eel, which during its life cycle makes an amazing migratory journey across an entire ocean and back. Other books of note this season are Twenty Minutes in Manhattan by the American architectural critic Michael Sorkin, which gives the reader an intimate sense of New York’s street life and architecture, and a new, revised edition of Timon Screech’s definitive Sex and the Floating World. Screech provocatively posits that the highly erotic images found in Edo period Japan were made against a background of sexual repression, opening up a forbidden fantasy world in an artistic way.
